St.Croix Virgin Islands - Online Travel Guide

St. Croix Weddings Venues

A number of hotels reside in St. Croix, in a range wide enough to fit a variety of styles and budges. Whether you prefer luxury accommodations, your own private cottage, or a simple room to hold your suitcase while you head off to the beach, visitors easily find an ideal location in this tropical paradise. One distinguishing characteristic of St. Croix hotels is their size – here, no massive high-rise buildings mar the beautiful landscapes. The accommodations remain small, with many inns, cottages, and family-owned businesses. Even the resorts of St. Croix hold that intimate, comfortable air that comes only from experiencing everything on a smaller scale. The amenities, however, remain just as plentiful as on any other island – golf courses, spas, fine and casual dining, water sports, and plenty of activities all await your arrival! For your wedding, the hotels also offer a range of packages including coordinators, flowers, music, choices of several ceremony sites, and even romantic additions such as champagne. Sit back, let someone else worry about the planning, and drink in the island paradise you’ve traveled to see. Below, we’ve listed just a few of these hotels to help with planning your special day.

The Buccaneer

A family owned resort since 1947, The Buccaneer property boasts a stately elegance and sense of luxury alongside a welcome and homey feeling. The friendly staff comes prepared to assist you with wedding planning – imagine your big day taking place either in the on-property romantic old sugar mill, or in front of lovely Mermaid Beach. Packages for 2-120 guests start at $1350, and include services such as photography, cake, and a coordinator. A variety of reception sites with hotel-provided linens, candles, and flowers add the perfect romantic touch to the end of your special day.

Discounted room blocks are available – simply ask when you call. The Buccaneer also offers romance, honeymoon, and engagement packages suitable for any step of a couple’s journey. Consider staying at this hotel for classy service, beautiful surroundings, and a memorable wedding!

The many beaches of St. Croix create a virtual Caribbean paradise for any wedding ceremony – imagine soft white sand, and water that fades into innumerable lovely shades of blue as the bays gradually widen into the ocean. For those who prefer the luxury and proximity of hotels with their pools, bars, and restaurants, many sit directly along the shores with easy walking access to the water. Naturally, snorkeling, water sports, and scuba diving are all great activities for couples, with many hotels offering rentals right from the beach!

For those who want a bit more privacy and an untouched, isolated location, the famous Buck Island lays only a boat ride away. One of the world’s few underwater National Monuments, Buck Island remains in pristine condition and has a sense of tranquility perfect for a romantic day get-away. Sandy Point, a National Wildlife Refuge, also draws tourists with its undeveloped scenery and unique opportunities to observe its endangered leatherback turtle population.

Regardless of whether you choose the active, party-atmosphere beaches or the quieter secluded escapes, St. Croix features a choice to suit any couple’s personality. Head to this lovely, quiet island and find just the right spot for you!

Buck Island

About a mile from the northern shore of St. Croix lies Buck Island, a 176-acre gem of untouched white sand, sweeping beaches, and waters that conceal some of the best snorkeling in the U.S. Virgin Islands. This location shines with natural beauty, and is actually a protected underwater National Monument in the United States Park System. Visitors travel from around the world to snorkel the beautiful coral reefs and observe the bountiful marine life, but the area also serves as a perfect destination wedding location. The completely undeveloped Turtle Beach paints a romantic backdrop that showcases the wild beauty of the Virgin Islands – couples here fine quiet, gorgeous expanses of island views, and a sense of tranquility difficult to replicate anywhere else in the world. Keep in mind that this haven from the modern world holds no vendors, no businesses, no bathrooms, and no hotels, so preparations must take place beforehand. Once you get there, however, the experience makes any hassle with transportation well worth it.

Davis Bay

This stunning north side bay, framed by a lush background of soaring green hills and bordered in soft sand, contains all of the scenic drama necessary for the perfect beach wedding. For all of its beauty, Davis Bay stays relatively secluded, allowing for private ceremonies without hoards of tourists and cruise ship visitors. Sprinkled with shady palm trees, the sand dips down into a rocky-bottomed bay in brilliant shades of blue, with mild to moderate surf perfect for swimming, snorkeling, or scuba diving. The nearby Carambola Hotel offers services such as bathrooms, a bar, and a restaurant for the convenience of your guests. Hold a wedding ceremony right on this picture-perfect beach and take in all the beauty the Caribbean has to offer!

Shoy’s Beach

A long, curved strip of white sand located past the Buccaneer Hotel, this beach is accessible by a narrow path from the hotel property. Wide and comfortable with palm tree shade, Shoy’s provides a great spot to put your feet up, relax, and let your worries slip away. Visitors find some easy snorkeling close to the shore. The beach generally remains a calm and serene location without huge crowds, despite a nearby residential area. A great location for tying the knot, Shoy’s Beach creates a romantic, intimate area for a beachside wedding.

Protestant Cay

Accessible by ferry from Christiansted, this island sits literally a minute away from St. Croix. Here visitors find the Island on the Cay Hotel, as well as beautiful beaches and sparkling water with wonderful views of Christiansted. Couples have their own private island on which to exchange vows, and the nearby hotel offers amenities including food and bars. Protestant Cay is the perfect romantic retreat for couples looking for a bit more seclusion!

Mermaid and Grotto Beach

These two lovely beaches grace the front of the Buccaneer Hotel, so you must access them through a road with a guard stand on the hotel property. Remember that beaches in the Virgin Islands are public and for everyone to enjoy, whether or not hotels sit on them, but non-guests must pay a small fee if they park in the hotel lot.

Mermaid Beach, the main beach of the hotel, features a big strip of white sand with plenty of palm trees for shade, and all the conveniences of the hotel – bathrooms, chairs, a water sports rental area, and a restaurant and bar. This beach draws a lot of families and stays a little busier than the smaller Grotto Beach. A reef not far from the shore offers fun snorkeling, plentiful palm trees offer the perfect spot for a snooze, and the curved white sand beach invites couples to walk hand-in-hand. Grotto Beach also includes access to the hotel amenities, and contains its own water sports rentals.

Sandy Point

Distinct because of its status as a National Wildlife Refuge, Sandy Point is home to the endangered leatherback turtles and operates on limited hours. Only open Saturdays and Sundays from 10 AM to 4 PM, it actually closes completely during the peak of the turtle-nesting season. The schedule seems difficult to work around, and you must abide by the various rules laid down for visitors (nothing stuck in the sand, no camping, no pets, no motorized vehicles, just to name a few) but if you can work it out, the stunning location more than makes up for the difficulties.

The refuge itself is 327 acres, with 2 miles of white sand beach (one of the longest in St. Croix.) The stretch of sand is incredibly wide, due to a high salt content that stunts the growth of plant life. You’ll have some difficulty finding shade, but the gorgeous blue water, the pristine and untouched surroundings, and the lengthy white sand beach are gorgeous, even by the high Caribbean standards. This location may best serve as a spot for small, intimate weddings with fewer people to manage. Depending on the size of your party, you may need a special events permit from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Website: Sandy Point

Cramer’s Park

Convenient features such as restrooms, grills, picnic tables, and sheds make this beach an ideal location for a wedding or reception. Hold your wedding ceremony during the day when the beach is still relatively peaceful, and a reception at night when the party begins. A popular spot for locals and visitors alike, music, celebration, and fun fill the air after the sun goes down – this beach by night becomes one of the great social scenes of St. Croix. This is the perfect location for couples who enjoy a little noise and activity in their lives, and who might be bored with a typical hotel reception.

Coakley Beach

Located on the eastern side of the island, this long strand of beach remains relatively isolated year-round. At certain points of the year, you may even manage to find it completely deserted. Rocky in some areas with a sandy-bottomed beach, it’s certainly not a lack of beauty that keeps visitors away – Coakley is simply one of those Caribbean beaches perfect for a quiet afternoon of swimming, sunning, and taking in the unmarred natural surroundings. Keep in mind that the beach contains no bathrooms, food, drink, or nearby hotels – whatever you need you must bring on your own. But it does provide a sense of tranquility hard to find in the modern world, perfect for a beautiful wedding ceremony!

Rainbow Beach

For a great atmosphere, visit this west coast beach complete with a restaurant, bar, and bathrooms. The site features spectacular sunsets for evening weddings, and a friendly vibe during the day with occasional volleyball games, live music, and a lot of people looking for a good time! Great snorkeling sits right off the shore for your honeymoon. Enjoy a laidback ceremony in a party-like atmosphere, perfect for your destination wedding!

For the ultimate privacy retreat in beautiful St. Croix, consider renting a villa for your wedding. Far away from the bustle of hotels, and with much more space than a single room provides, villas allow couples to spread out in their own home away from home. Visitors find a wide range of styles to suit the needs of any party, ranging from the reasonably priced to the indulgent, and the small and cozy to spacious with room for all of your guests. Some even include maid or cleaning services and a concierge – the many options allow you to customize the experience completely to your wedding needs. Hold the ceremony right near your private pool (check the rental agreement first to make sure weddings are permitted) with breathtaking views of the Caribbean Sea spread out beneath you! Choose one close to the historical cities of Christiansted or Frederiksted, pick your favorite beach along the St. Croix coast, or settle in almost any other location you prefer. For an unparalleled Caribbean wedding experience, St. Croix villas offer the best of hotel comfort along with beautiful settings and extra intimacy.

For ceremonies in a St. Croix church, first communicate closely with your religious leader from home about your wedding plans, and to find out what your religion’s rules permit in terms of location. Either you or a wedding planner can contact the minister of the St. Croix church, although an island wedding planner may have prior knowledge and experience dealing with your chosen church. Be sure to begin planning for a religious ceremony early, as they require more fees and details.

Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve

This section of National Park covers over 900 acres of protected land, including some of the largest remaining mangrove forests in the Virgin Islands. Established as a park, it is perhaps best known as a location where Christopher Columbus landed in 1493, which eventually resulted in historical conflict. The beach where he landed is small and somewhat pebbly and rocky in some spots, a lovely location to exchange vows in front of the blue water. The wild beauty of the rest of the park is a perfect natural setting for those who want out of the busier areas of St. Croix – say “I do” in an quiet location without crowds of sunbathing tourists, and enjoy the acres upon acres of flourishing plant life and animals. A special use permit may be required for some weddings.

For more information, contact the Visitor Center at Salt River Bay, open 9 AM-4 PM Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. This center remains open November through June, and in the event that it’s closed, go to the Fort Christianvaern National Historical Site instead (8:00 AM-4:45 PM Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM-4:45 PM on weekends and holidays.)

Christiansted National Historic Site

For an exciting and unique venue, consider a wedding at the Christiansted National History Site, a group of five historical buildings right on the waterfront. Established in 1952 as a way to preserve the history of St. Croix and its Danish roots, the buildings include: Fort Christiansvaern (1738), the Danish West India & Guinea Company Warehouse (1749), the Steeple Building (1753), the Danish Custom House (1844), and the Scale House (1856). Today it is owned and kept up by the National Park Service, and weddings and other organized gatherings require a special use permit, with a $50 processing fee.
